Admissions Policy

Hydrostone Academy is a small, independent school that values community, mindfulness, outdoor education, the arts, and culturally sustaining academics. We strive to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all of our students within the scope of the resources we are able to provide.

Admissions Criteria

  • Case-by-Case Evaluation: Each application is reviewed individually to determine whether Hydrostone Academy is an appropriate fit for the student and family.
  • Capacity of School Resources: As a small school with limited staff, we do not have a dedicated Learning Centre or specialized learning support staff. We are unable to provide one-on-one educational assistance to stay in class (to be successful in their learning, socialization and or to support their behaviour or emotional regulation).
  • Student Needs: Students who require a high level of individualized or one-on-one support, or who need specialized programming beyond what can reasonably be provided in a classroom setting, cannot be accommodated at Hydrostone Academy.
  • Classroom Environment: Applicants must be able to participate meaningfully in a small-class setting with the support available from the classroom teacher and the general resources of the school.

Admissions Process

  • Families are asked to provide full disclosure of any academic, behavioural, medical, or social-emotional needs that may impact their child’s learning experience.
  • The admissions team reviews application materials, school reports, and any assessments provided to determine whether Hydrostone Academy can meet the student’s needs.
  • When appropriate, a student visit, interview, or classroom observation may be part of the admissions process.
  • Final admissions decisions are based on alignment with the school’s mission and values, classroom composition, and the school’s capacity to support the student.

Commitment to Families

We are committed to honesty and transparency throughout the admissions process. If Hydrostone Academy is not able to meet a student’s needs, we will communicate this respectfully and, where possible, suggest alternative educational settings that may be a better fit.
